Aussie Dances – Our Philosophy
Ian McKenzie
The concept behind “Aussie Dances” was discussed around the middle of 2007. We determined that there was a market need not being catered for. That is, a regular social dance offering a variety of dance styles in the Brisbane area, with music from live performers.
When we went ahead with the implementation of the concept, we were very careful not to run events that would clash with regular events being offered by other organisations. One of our aims was to make more people aware of the enjoyment to be had through attendance at social dances, and we were working to obtain the support of dance teachers, dance studios, dance bands and dance venues generally, in the Brisbane area.
Saturday night was decided upon as the ideal night of the week, meeting the criteria we had set for ourselves. We established a web site at www.brisbanedances.com, organised our venues and our live performers, and commenced operation in August 2007.
Since that date, the support we have received from people wanting to dance or just be at a venue with live music and friendly people, from dance studios, teachers, bands and dance venues has been incredibly positive.
Aussie Dances currently provide dances with live music every Friday and some Saturday nights in Brisbane.
Several dance studios and dance teachers had already been sending their students along to our Aussie Dances, but early in 2008 also we established strategic alliances with many of the best dance studios and dance teachers operating in Brisbane. Among these are Australian Champion dancers, and teachers who have taught Australian champion dancers.
On a rotating basis, these dance studios are conducting FREE dance lessons for all of our Aussie Dancers before each social dance we operate. This is a Win/Win situation. Aussie Dances is giving a value added service to all of our dance participants at no additional cost to them. Several of the dance studios with whom we are working have reported increased attendance at their social dance classes and for individualised tuition.
Aussie Dances has produced a weekly newsletter following each week's dances. Anyone is welcome to subscribe to this newsletter, and each of them has been published on our web site, generally a few days after the newsletter has been sent out to subscribers. All of these newsletters are available for anyone with Internet access to read. Notes on the dances that we have conducted are also published on the web site following each week's dances. These notes are also available for anyone with Internet access to read.
We have even given each of the dance studios working with us a page of their own on our web site at no cost. Our various performers and venues also have one of these.
Our aim at Aussie Dances is, and always has been to offer people a choice. We have openly promoted other dances and/or other forms of entertainment in which people may want to participate.
We would like people to come along to our dances because they will enjoy them, and because they are receiving good value for their money. Many of our participants have told us just that.
Any announcements made at any Aussie Dance regarding any other dance venue or dance school has always been highly supportive. Anything Aussie Dances has ever written in newsletters, on web sites or anywhere else regarding other venues and schools also has been highly supportive.
We look forward to seeing you soon at an Aussie Dance.
